Dynamic Regeneration represents a theoretical project grounded in readiness – a real-world application for real users in a real scenario. Supported by data we compiled over six months, our project approaches an actual, programmed and built expansion/adaptive re-use project in Louisville, Kentucky.
For this reason, the project requires us to merge the theoretical with the practical: As we sought to meet the American Institute of Architect’s 2030 Challenge for a net-zero, carbon- neutral building, we did so with real-world, practical solutions, from a cogent structural system to innovative and available materials.
In the process, we realized the project also represents a paradigmatic shift: The way we think, build, and repurpose structures changes because a changing climate necessitates a re-ordering of thought. A wall becomes a thermal cavity, structure becomes recycled composites, skin becomes photovoltaic, and beauty, old and new, becomes enmeshed in a forever shifted paradigm. This shift is real, and, with our project, we asked the vital theoretical question: Are we ready for the shift today? We think the answer is yes.
